Role of Iron in Plant Nutrition

Source. Iron is made available to the plant in the form of ferrous and ferric ions.

Regions. It is required everywhere in the plant and collects along the leaf veins.

Functions. It is a constituent of ferredoxin and cytochromes. Iron activates catalase. It plays an important role in the formation of chlorophyll. It takes part in photosynthesis and in respiration for the release of energy. Iron is a component of flavoproteins.

Deficiency symptoms

(i) Chlorosis particularly in younger leaves, the mature leaves remain unaffected.
(ii) Inhibits chloroplast formation.
(iii) Stalks remain short and slender.
(iv) Interveinal white chlorosis.
(v) May develop necrosis also.
